Worth becoming a scientist?

Help the world! the discoveries you make today could be used to cure cancer or put a colony in a new SS etc. in the future. Plus if you're top of the field then Mr. Nobel might have a few million he'd like to send your way ;) anyways I plan to do a PhD in Physics, though I'm only in my third undergrad year now.
